The Next.Next.Big.Thing. = Metaweb

After a day and a half of sitting in sessions at the #Web2Summit conference and hearing about the Next.Big.Thing., I'm reminded of what I believe to be the Next.Next.Big.Thing. that had been envisioned by Nova Spivack over a year ago and coined as the Metaweb. A picture is worth a thousand words, so here it is:

I will have much more to write about this picture and the terms/concepts depicted on it when I have a bit more time in the near future. For now, I'd like to get anyone's immediate reactions, especially if you're in violent disagreement, in the comments, so we can at least get the dialogue going. Thanks!

[Update: I just noticed that Nova had recently posted his "How To Build The Global Mind" article, which references Kevin Kelly, whose session at Web2Summit I tweeted about this morning. We have indeed come full circle, enabled by the glorious interconnected Web. How cool is that?!]

[Update 11/07/2008: Kevin Kelly's High Order Bit session at Web 2.0 Summit is now available at http://web20summit.blip.tv/#1448228.]

(I always like to take the other side :-)

I violently disagree, though we will get there (as depicted so excellently in the pic), this will never happen overnight, it will happen over a period of decades.

My first startup (1997) was all about a categorization schema that would "tag" all info correctly (including semantically).  We never got past a seed round because all the "seers" claimed XML (new buzz word dujour at the time) would give us all of that.  Well here we are 10 years latter, and I see no change.

It will all happen I will agree with that, but it can not be a Next big thing because it will happen over time, incrementally.

psss- btw the Next Next big thing is Location Awareness

I agree that we will get to what you are suggesting with the Meta Web idea.  There is still the Semantic Web stage to go through though.  Connecting the knowledge elements is still very rudimentary today.  I would be curious how this will be accelerated?

Andrew & Larry, Semantic Web and Smarter Devices are part of the Next.Big.Thing. I'm talking about the NEXT.Next.Big.Thing after that. Yes, it'll take at least 7-10 years, probably more depending on how long the global economy recovers.
