"Why?" is such a critical question. In Japan, Toyota uses what is called Kaizen (japanese for continuous improvement) and the idea behind this model is that in the case of why, to ask is 5 times - yes, 5 times.

When you come across a question or a problem, asking Why 5 times will give you a better understanding of what the answer should be as opposed to jumping to a conclusion.

Yes, I tried the URLs with 4 different browsers (ArmorSurf, Firefox, Internet Exploiter and Opera) and they don't work. I'm using OpenDNS and it reports: "You tried to visit en.community.dell.com, which is not loading." I've tried clicking the links for the community forums at support.dell.com and they don't work either. Perhaps you don't use OpenDNS.

Huh? The http://en.community.dell.com URL works fine for me. Have you tried http://dell.com/community? That should redirect to the right place.

"Why" is what matters. "How" is what we put on a diagram and flow chart (and I'm grateful for the one in your post). And, as far as ROI... well, until community members get what they want ... "why" would they want to remain as part of any audience? If they do not remain within your audience.... you can forget your ROI. "What's in it for me?" is human nature... why fight it?

LL ... Captain Obvious... maybe. But, if the reason so many communities fail; "because of lack of planning"... is so obvious.... then why do so many fail? "Why" do those who want the ROI ignore the obvious?

Thanks for the acknowledgment. I think it was the pain from the 30th time answering the ROI question that really brought this about. More and more I see that question not so much looking for an answer, but actually an objection, hidden in an ROI question. Generally objections come from a failure to do (or properly articulate) end to end planning.

Thank you for the link, Lawrence. I think you face a rather unique challenge with Sharepoint - namely, the community relies on the prompt and knowledgeable answering of questions. If there is nobody there to answer the questions quickly and accurately, the community will struggle.

For most online communities, there aren't as many time critical questions, or questions that can only be answered by those with the right skills and knowledge. It is interesting to read how you overcame this issue by offering a desirable 'carrot' to get those knowledgeable, active members your community so desperately needed.

Once you have awarded the prize though, do you have a plan for retaining those members?
